A teacher was killed and at least 25 schoolgirls were abducted on Monday when armed men attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The gunmen, described by authorities as heavily armed bandits, invaded the school around 4:00 a.m., engaging security personnel in a fierce exchange of gunfire before gaining access to the hostels and whisking away the students.

During the attack, a staff member identified as a teacher was shot dead while attempting to protect the students. Police also confirmed that several security operatives on duty came under heavy fire as they tried to repel the attackers.

Spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command said a coordinated rescue operation involving police tactical teams, the military, and vigilante groups has been launched to track the assailants and ensure the safe return of the abducted students.

The incident adds to the growing wave of school kidnappings in northwestern Nigeria, where criminal gangs frequently target educational institutions for ransom. Security agencies say efforts are ongoing to tighten surveillance across vulnerable communities.

Kebbi State authorities have urged residents to remain calm, assuring that all measures are being taken to hold the attackers accountable and bring the students home safely.
