The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed as false a viral image claiming the introduction of a new N5,000 banknote featuring Bola Tinubu.
The image, widely circulated across social media platforms, suggested that the apex bank had unveiled a redesigned high-denomination currency note. The claim quickly gained traction, sparking debates among users over its authenticity and the possibility of a new currency rollout.
Reacting to the development, the CBN issued a clarification via its official account on X, firmly debunking the claim. The bank described the content as entirely false and urged the public to disregard the misleading information.
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided,” the statement read.
The clarification comes amid recurring misinformation about the introduction of higher denomination naira notes. The apex bank recalled that in 2025, it had similarly refuted reports alleging the launch of N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes, stressing at the time that no such plans existed.
The CBN reiterated the importance of verifying information from official sources before sharing, warning that the spread of false financial news could cause unnecessary confusion and undermine public confidence in the monetary system.
It assured Nigerians that any decision regarding currency redesign or the introduction of new denominations would be formally communicated through its official channels. The bank therefore advised the public to remain cautious and rely only on verified announcements, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining transparency and stability within Nigeria’s financial system
