The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, awarding the trophy to Morocco following a controversial ruling.
The decision comes after CAF’s Appeal Board determined that Senegal forfeited the final match against Morocco due to disciplinary breaches during the game. As a result, the match has been recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of Morocco, overturning Senegal’s initial win.
Senegal had originally defeated Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a dramatic final played in Rabat. However, the match was marred by controversy when Senegalese players temporarily left the pitch in protest of a late penalty decision.
CAF ruled that the walk-off violated tournament regulations, which state that any team that leaves the field without the referee’s approval can be deemed to have forfeited the match.
Following the ruling, Morocco have now been declared AFCON 2025 champions, securing their second title in the competition’s history.
The decision has sparked major controversy across African football, with Senegal strongly opposing the verdict and preparing to challenge it at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
In addition to the title reversal, CAF also issued fines and sanctions related to incidents that occurred during the final, further highlighting the chaotic nature of one of the most disputed matches in AFCON history.
