The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed sanctions on Algeria following incidents of player misconduct and crowd unrest during and after a recent international match against Nigeria. The disciplinary action comes after CAF reviewed reports from match officials, security personnel, and video evidence linked to the encounter.
According to CAF, several Algerian players were involved in unsporting behaviour during the game, including confrontations with match officials and opposing players. The governing body noted that such actions violate CAF’s code of conduct, which emphasizes respect, fair play, and professionalism at all levels of African football.
In addition to the players’ conduct, CAF expressed serious concern over the behaviour of sections of the Algerian crowd. Reports indicated that objects were thrown onto the pitch, creating safety risks for players, officials, and fans. CAF stated that crowd control failures and inadequate security arrangements contributed to the escalation of tensions.
As part of the sanctions, Algeria has been fined an undisclosed amount, while certain players are expected to face suspensions pending further review. CAF also warned that repeated offences could result in harsher penalties, including matches being played behind closed doors or at neutral venues.
CAF reiterated that safety and discipline remain central to its mission, especially as African football continues to grow in global relevance. The body stressed that national federations are responsible for ensuring their teams and supporters adhere to established standards during competitions.
The Nigeria Football Federation welcomed CAF’s decision, stating that accountability is essential for maintaining integrity in the sport. Nigerian officials emphasized that football should unite fans across the continent, not fuel hostility or violence.
CAF concluded by urging all member associations to invest more in player education, supporter engagement, and stadium security. The organisation said it will continue to enforce its regulations strictly to protect the image of African football and ensure that matches are played in a safe and respectful environment.
