The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite identified as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift cosmetic surgery, commonly referred to as BBL, at a clinic in the state.
A Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing fat from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and injecting it into the buttocks to create a fuller and more rounded shape. The procedure has grown increasingly popular in recent years but has also raised concerns among health professionals due to potential complications.
The investigation is being carried out by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the regulatory body responsible for overseeing and accrediting healthcare facilities across Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Abiola Idowu, confirmed that the probe was initiated following reports circulating on social media suggesting that the woman developed medical complications after undergoing the aesthetic procedure.
According to the statement, the complications were believed to have occurred during or shortly after the surgery, prompting authorities to begin a detailed review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The state government assured the public that a comprehensive, professional, and transparent investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the woman’s death and whether medical or regulatory lapses contributed to the outcome.
Preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA. However, officials stressed that registration alone does not shield any health facility from scrutiny, particularly when patient safety concerns arise.
The agency explained that it retains the authority to investigate any medical establishment operating within the state if allegations of negligence or safety violations are reported.
HEFAMAA further noted that it is mandated to monitor, license, and regulate healthcare facilities in Lagos to ensure strict compliance with established operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols.
Authorities also reiterated that cosmetic and aesthetic surgical procedures performed within the state must adhere to clearly defined regulatory requirements. These standards cover facility conditions, practitioner qualifications, and safety measures designed to protect patients undergoing such procedures.
The outcome of the ongoing investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any regulatory actions will be taken.
