MAIDUGURI – The Borno State Police Command has flooded the streets of Maiduguri with over 1,000 officers following a devastating suicide bombing at a mosque that left five people dead and 35 others wounded.
The heightened security measures come as the state’s Christian community gathers to celebrate Christmas. Security forces have been stationed at major intersections, known flashpoints, and places of worship to prevent further atrocities.
Escalation of Security Post-Attack
The blast occurred at approximately 6:00 pm on Wednesday at the Al-Adum Mosque in Gamboru Market, just as worshippers had gathered for evening prayers.
Speaking on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, confirmed that while festive security plans were already in motion, Wednesday’s tragedy necessitated a more “intense” approach.
“We are ensuring a full domination of security personnel at churches, recreational centres, and areas with high public footfall,” Daso stated. “This is a joint operation involving the police and all emergency response teams. Over 1,000 personnel have been mobilised within the capital alone.”
Key Security Protocols Now in Effect:
-
Mandatory Screening: Every individual entering a church or mosque must undergo a physical scan and security clearance.
-
Strategic Patrols: Armed officers are stationed at all major festive gathering points.
-
Emergency Vigilance: Citizens have been urged to use designated emergency numbers to report any suspicious individuals or packages immediately.
Governor Zulum Condemns “Barbaric” Act
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed his profound grief over the attack, describing it as an inhumane desecration of a holy place.
In a statement released through his media aide, Dauda Iliya, the Governor remarked:
“Attacking a place of worship while the faithful are in prayer is an act of utter barbarism. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
The Governor reassured the public that robust measures are now in place to protect both Muslim and Christian residents during the remainder of the festive season.
Security Advice for Residents
The police have reminded the public to remain highly observant of their surroundings while going about their lawful business. The command remains on high alert to forestall any further security breaches.
