The African Democratic Congress in Borno State has distanced itself from the Transitional and Registration committees allegedly constituted by one of its chieftains, Kashim Imam, describing the move as unauthorised and unacceptable.
The position of the party was made known on Tuesday by the state chairman of the ADC, Alhaji Umar Bolori, during a news conference in Maiduguri. He said the committees were not recognised by the party leadership and had no mandate to act on behalf of the ADC in the state.
Bolori, who spoke on behalf of major stakeholders of the party in Borno, described members of the committees as political jobbers allegedly attempting to infiltrate the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stressed that the ADC leadership in the state was not involved in the formation of the groups.
According to the chairman, the party was currently focused on strengthening its structure and preparing to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress in Borno. He added that the ADC had continued to receive defectors from other opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party.
Bolori said consultations were ongoing among stakeholders before the inauguration of any committees to manage the party’s affairs in the state.
He further alleged that individuals led by Kashim Imam forcefully entered a party meeting venue with political thugs, resulting in a breach of security and injuries to party members and security personnel.
Based on the incident, the State Working Committee dissociated itself from all actions taken at the meeting. Bolori disclosed that relevant security agencies, including the Police and the Department of State Services, had been notified to prevent a recurrence.
He urged party members to remain calm and law abiding while calling on the national leadership of the ADC to urgently intervene in the party’s affairs in Borno State.
