Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has said he does not know who will succeed him when his tenure expires in May 2027, dismissing speculations that he is backing any individual for the position.
Zulum made the clarification over the weekend while addressing stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a critical meeting held in Maiduguri. He stated that his administration remains focused on improving security and delivering development projects across the state rather than engaging in succession politics.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to a fair, transparent and just process in the conduct of forthcoming party congresses, stressing that credibility and integrity are essential for the unity and long-term success of the APC in Borno State.
According to him, the party must allow a fresh set of individuals to emerge through a democratic process, noting that inclusivity and grassroots participation are key to strengthening the party’s structure. He urged party leaders and members to prioritise internal democracy and avoid actions that could cause division.
Zulum also dismissed claims that he intends to influence the choice of party officials or candidates for elective offices ahead of 2027. He stated clearly that he has not anointed anyone for any position within the party or beyond.
“I have no candidate for any position, and I do not know who will succeed me. I have entrusted the choice of leaders to Almighty Allah, in line with the democratic will of party members and the people of Borno State,” the governor said.
He called on APC stakeholders to remain united and support initiatives aimed at consolidating peace, security and development in the state as preparations for future political activities gradually take shape.
