The faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) under the leadership of Tajudeen Baruwa has taken over the union’s national secretariat.
The takeover occurred early Monday as members of the faction stormed the union’s headquarters in Abuja, asserting control of the premises.
The development is the latest in a prolonged leadership crisis within the NURTW, which has seen rival factions battle for authority since 2024. The opposing camp is led by Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
Members of the union had elected MC Oluomo as National President in November 2024, a move that initially appeared to settle the leadership question. However, the dispute escalated into a legal battle, with both factions laying claim to the union’s leadership.
A court ruling later affirmed Baruwa as the legitimate leader, effectively nullifying MC Oluomo’s position. Despite the judgment, MC Oluomo has continued to operate as President, deepening the division within the union.
Monday’s takeover signals a significant escalation in the crisis, raising concerns about stability and control within one of Nigeria’s most influential transport unions.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from MC Oluomo or his faction regarding the development.
