Suspected bandits have attacked a community in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leaving several residents reportedly dead while others were abducted during the assault.
The attack was said to have occurred in the early hours of Monday, throwing the community into panic as gunmen invaded the area and opened fire, forcing residents to flee for safety.
Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of fear and confusion, with gunshots heard in the background while people screamed and ran for cover. The clips were shared on X by Nuhu Sada, the Social Democratic Party candidate for the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
In one of his posts, Sada described the incident as a “night of terror,” sharing a video of a young boy who said he watched helplessly as bandits abducted his grandmother during the raid.
According to the boy, the attackers stormed their house and demanded mobile phones from members of the household. He explained that his grandmother asked him to hand over the phones to the gunmen in an attempt to avoid further harm.
Despite complying with their demands, the attackers reportedly assaulted some residents in the house. The boy narrated that one woman was slapped while another was struck with the butt of a gun before the gunmen eventually took his grandmother away.
He added that after carrying out the attack, the assailants fled the community through the Tashan Maliki axis.
Another video shared earlier suggested that the attack might have still been ongoing at the time it was recorded, with residents heard shouting and warning others to remain indoors as gunshots echoed across the area.
Makarfi is located near Zaria, a major city in Kaduna State, and has experienced recurring security challenges linked to banditry and kidnappings across parts of northern Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to release an official statement on the incident, and the exact number of those killed or abducted remained unclear.
