The African Union (AU) has condemned recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump against Nigeria, urging Washington to embrace dialogue and mutual respect instead of confrontation.

In a statement issued on Friday from its headquarters in Addis Ababa, the AU described Trump’s remarks as “unhelpful and provocative,” warning that such comments could strain diplomatic relations and destabilize the region.

“The African Union reaffirms its unwavering support for the government and people of Nigeria,” the statement said. “Africa’s partnership with the United States must be anchored on mutual respect, shared values, and peaceful engagement.”

The continental body emphasized that Nigeria remains a central pillar of Africa’s political and economic stability and should be treated with the dignity it deserves.

Trump’s controversial comments earlier in the week — hinting at possible sanctions or military action against Nigeria — have drawn widespread criticism across Africa and beyond.

Analysts say the AU’s swift reaction signals Africa’s growing determination to defend its sovereignty and speak with one voice on international issues.

The Union urged both nations to pursue diplomatic channels and work toward resolving any disagreements through constructive engagement.
