Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) today (Monday), marking a significant shift that could reshape Nigeria’s opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku, who met with ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa over the weekend, publicly confirmed his intention to obtain his membership card during the visit. His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, disclosed on Sunday that the former vice president’s registration is a strategic step in the ongoing opposition coalition-building efforts.

Rasheeth noted that Atiku’s decision signals a fresh phase in the opposition realignment he has championed since July, when he led the initiative adopting the ADC as a unified platform for opposition figures aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle. Despite this, Atiku, Peter Obi, Babachir Lawal, and other key figures had delayed formal registration until now.

Adamawa ADC Chairman, Shehu Yohanna, confirmed that Atiku would be in Yola this week for his birthday celebrations and humanitarian activities in Jada Local Government Area. He expressed confidence that Atiku would use the occasion to officially register and collect his membership card, urging other leaders—including former SGF Babachir Lawal—to follow suit.

This development comes just days after the ADC clarified why both Atiku and Obi were absent during the inauguration of the party’s new national secretariat in Abuja on November 17. Party leaders dismissed claims of internal friction, describing the new office as a symbol of renewed political direction and unity.
