Low voter turnout, allegations of vote buying, intimidation, and sporadic violence characterised Saturday’s area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory, leaving many residents disillusioned with the electoral process.

Across several communities — including Jikwoyi, Karu, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Nyanya, Mpape, Dei-Dei, Kuje, Kwali, Lugbe and Durumi turnout was reported to be abysmally low, with many eligible voters opting to stay away from polling units. Residents cited frustration with the political class and a lack of confidence in the credibility and transparency of the elections.

Beyond voter apathy, the polls were marred by widespread allegations of vote buying and selling in parts of the territory. Despite warnings from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, opposition party agents alleged that inducements were openly offered to voters in some polling units, particularly in Gwagwalada and Bwari area councils. According to these claims, cash payments ranging from ₦500 to ₦3,000 were allegedly exchanged for votes.

The elections were also plagued by logistical and technical challenges, including late arrival of materials, missing party logos on some ballot papers, and claims of voter disenfranchisement. These issues further undermined confidence in the conduct of the exercise.

Incidents of violence were recorded in several locations, especially within Bwari Area Council. Reports indicated that voters fled polling areas following clashes linked to alleged vote buying. In one incident, security operatives reportedly fired teargas to disperse crowds, affecting voters and journalists alike. Elsewhere, a Department of State Services operative was allegedly attacked by youths in Kuje, sustaining injuries and property loss before escaping.

Supporters of rival political parties also clashed in parts of Bwari, including Ushafa, over accusations of intimidation and inducement at polling units.

Additionally, some residents alleged that the presence of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, around polling units intimidated opposition supporters. Critics argued that his movements under the guise of monitoring elections emboldened ruling party supporters and discouraged voters perceived to be opposed to them.

As of the time of reporting, final results of the area council elections were still being awaited.
