Residents of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, have been thrown into a state of fear and anxiety following the brutal killing of a woman by suspected assailants in the area.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at Oderemi village in Ido Local Government Area, where the victim, identified as Mrs. Misitura Akanke, was reportedly attacked and killed in a gruesome manner. According to accounts from the community, the shocking nature of the killing sparked widespread panic among residents, many of whom expressed concern over growing insecurity in the area.
Sources disclosed that Mrs. Akanke had gone to a nearby bush to gather vegetables when she was allegedly confronted by the assailants. She was said to have been raped and subsequently murdered, a development that has further heightened tension and outrage within the community.
During the incident, an operative of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, reportedly intervened in an attempt to stop the attack. However, the officer was injured in the process and is said to be receiving medical attention.
Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the police are aware of the incident and have commenced a full investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and apprehend those responsible.
According to him, security agencies are working to track down the perpetrators, while efforts are also being made to restore calm in the affected community. He assured residents that the police would leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice for the victim and safeguarding lives and property.
Meanwhile, the incident has renewed calls from residents and community leaders for improved security patrols and proactive measures to curb violent crimes, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities around Ibadan.
