Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle may be forced into late changes to his midfield options ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following concerns over the fitness of Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Soccernet.ng reports.
Chelle released his provisional squad list earlier this week, introducing several new names as he looks to reshape Nigeria’s midfield. Among the fresh call-ups is 21-year-old Akinsanmiro, who has been one of the standout performers for newly promoted Pisa in Serie A this season. The Inter Milan loanee had been tipped for a debut during the last international window before a shoulder injury ruled him out.
The midfielder was initially expected to miss 4–6 weeks, with hopes that he would return for Pisa’s clash against Parma at the Arena Garibaldi on Monday. However, new reports from Parma Live indicate that Akinsanmiro is still some way from full recovery. As of Thursday, he was training individually and has not yet rejoined the main squad.
This suggests he will need a late fitness test before being cleared to feature against Parma. His availability for AFCON selection is now in doubt.
Will Akinsanmiro Make the Final Super Eagles Squad?
Chelle has often been criticised for selecting too few midfielders, but with his first major tournament approaching, he is expected to adjust his approach. Nigeria’s established midfielders have struggled for form, increasing the need for fresh competition in the squad.
Akinsanmiro has the attributes to strengthen Chelle’s setup, but his injury may arrive at the worst possible time. With the final AFCON squad list due next week, the midfielder must prove his fitness quickly if he hopes to keep his place in the coach’s plans.
