The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to impose a one-party state ahead of the 2027 general elections by using the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to weaken opposition parties.
Addressing journalists at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on Thursday, ADC National Chairman David Mark called for the immediate removal of INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, alleging bias and unlawful actions.
This followed INEC’s Wednesday announcement to delist key ADC leaders, including David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and others. INEC, through National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, stated the decision was in compliance with a court order directing the commission to maintain the status quo pending a determination by the trial court.
The ADC has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since 2025, following the emergence of a new National Working Committee (NWC) led by Mark in July 2025. The conflict originated from disagreements over the tenure of former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, whose term officially ended in August 2022. Nwosu’s involvement in facilitating the 2025 leadership transition triggered opposition from rival factions, resulting in multiple court cases and creating uncertainty within the party.
Mark accused the government of deliberately manipulating opposition politics to secure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the only viable candidate in 2027, despite widespread poverty and insecurity.
“The agenda is very clear: to create a situation where, in 2027, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerges as the only option left for the people, despite the widespread suffering and wanton killings. The twin challenge of deepening poverty and a worsening security situation in the country did not just happen. They are direct consequences of the failure of this government. They know Nigerians will vote them out. This is why they would do anything to hang on to power by hook or crook,” Mark said.
He emphasized that joining the ADC was a deliberate decision backed by thorough due diligence.
“In furtherance of this process, a NEC meeting was convened on July 29th, 2025, monitored by INEC officials. One of the conclusions was the dissolution of the National Working Committee and the ratification of a caretaker committee to take over party affairs, with my humble self as National Chairman; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary; and others serving as officers. INEC formally recognized these resolutions and uploaded the NWC members’ names on September 9th, 2025,” Mark added.
The ADC warned that any attempts to undermine its leadership or impose expelled individuals would be resisted, describing such actions as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the next general elections.
