A New Era for Nigeria’s Fiscal Future: GNA Commends the Forthcoming Signing of Landmark Tax Reform Bills

By Alhaji Ismail Longe
Chairperson, Economics & Financial Experts (EFE), Great Nigerian Assembly (GNA)

Nigeria stands on the cusp of a transformative moment. As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed four comprehensive tax reform bills into law, we at the Great Nigerian Assembly (GNA)—particularly within the Economics and Financial Experts (EFE) professional group—applaud this historic step towards building a modern, inclusive, and sustainable fiscal architecture for our nation.

These bills, the Nigeria Tax Bill (Ease of Doing Business)Nigeria Tax Administration BillNigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill, represent more than just legislative reforms. They are a clear signal that Nigeria is ready to realign its tax and revenue systems with the demands of 21st-century governance.

As professionals drawn from every sector of the Nigerian economy, the GNA believes that this development is a turning point that must not only be celebrated but actively monitored, supported, and implemented with precision and transparency.

About GNA: Who We Are and What We Do

The Great Nigerian Assembly (GNA) is a global coalition of visionary and patriotic Nigerian professionals—non-political, non-governmental, and not-for-profit—dedicated to nation-building. Since our founding in 2018 in Chicago, USA, we have established 16 Professional Groups, each serving as an engine for innovation, collaboration, and strategic solutions tailored to Nigeria’s development challenges.

From promoting good governance, empowering youth, and advocating civic engagement, to delivering cutting-edge global seminars —our mission is to bridge the gap between government and citizens, amplify professional voices, and provide expert-backed policy insights that strengthen the foundations of the Nigerian state.

This is why the GNA, through its Economics & Financial Experts group, considers these reform bills to be a monumental achievement that aligns with our vision for economic stability, investment readiness, and national growth.

What the Reforms Mean

The harmonisation of tax laws under the Nigeria Tax Bill is a welcome development. For decades, Nigerian businesses have battled with tax fragmentation, conflicting regulations, and excessive compliance costs. A unified tax code promises predictability, encourages entrepreneurship, and reduces the burden on SMEs that are the bedrock of job creation.

The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill and the creation of a uniform structure across federal, state, and local governments will further improve efficiency and curb leakages. Importantly, it fosters intergovernmental synergy, something Nigeria desperately needs.

Perhaps the boldest component is the establishment of the new Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), replacing the FIRS and broadening its scope to include non-tax revenues, alongside stringent governance, accountability, and performance mandates. This is visionary.

Equally important, the Joint Revenue Board Bill institutionalizes coordination across tiers of government and ensures that no state or local government is left behind in Nigeria’s fiscal modernization.

GNA’s United Voice

GN Collins Nweke, Vice Chairperson of the GNA Global Advisory Council, states:
“These bills are not just economic tools; they are instruments of national healing. By simplifying tax structures and ensuring justice through mechanisms like the Tax Ombudsman, Nigeria is signaling that both government and the governed matter. GNA stands fully behind this reform and calls for its immediate and faithful implementation.”

GN Kayode Elusoji, Executive Director of the GNA, adds:
“This move is in sync with the GNA’s drive for national rebirth through responsible leadership, efficient governance, and citizen-focused reforms. President Tinubu’s commitment to these bills reflects a new mindset—a Nigeria that listens, learns, and leads. We urge citizens and professionals alike to rise and support these reforms with patriotic vigilance.”

GN (Engr.) Olufunsho Johnson Adetayo, Chairperson of the GNA Global Advisory Council, concludes with a charge:
“While this is a commendable leap, reform must be matched by robust implementation. We encourage the Federal Government to ensure strict monitoring, continuous stakeholder engagement, and urgent attention to Nigeria’s worsening security situation. Only in an environment of peace and justice can these policies thrive and deliver their full promise.”

In Closing

Nigeria is rising—and not by wishful thinking, but through purposeful action. As these landmark bills become law, the onus is now on every government arm, professional body, and citizen to ensure that this opportunity is not squandered.

Let this be the beginning of a new chapter—where governance is principled, prosperity is inclusive, and Nigeria finally walks in the fullness of her potential.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live the Great Nigerian Assembly.
