Super Eagles invitee Philip Otele has made history after becoming the first Nigerian to score for Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.

The 26-year-old winger achieved the milestone during Hamburg’s 3–2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, where he opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a close-range finish.

With that goal, Otele etched his name into the club’s record books, becoming the first Nigerian player to find the net for Hamburg in Germany’s top flight.

Although Hamburg made a strong start and even built a two-goal lead, Borussia Dortmund mounted a comeback in the second half to secure all three points.

Otele’s achievement is particularly notable given the club’s previous connections with Nigerian players. While talents like Jordan Torunarigha have featured for the team, none had scored in the Bundesliga for Hamburg before now.

The winger only recently joined Hamburg on loan and has already begun making an impact, with his historic goal coming in just his seventh appearance for the club.

His form will be encouraging for the Nigeria national football team coaching crew, especially after earning his first senior call-up ahead of upcoming international friendlies.
