Umo Eno has described late cleric Uma Ukpai as “a gift to humanity,” praising his lifelong contributions to spiritual growth, leadership, and humanitarian service.
The governor made the remarks on Friday during a Night of Songs and Tributes organised by the Akwa Ibom State Government in honour of the late evangelist. The event was held at the International Christian Worship Centre as part of the ongoing funeral ceremonies.
Ukpai, who passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80, was widely regarded as a towering figure in Nigeria’s Christian community. In a statement released by the Government House press unit, Eno described him as a moral compass and a global spiritual leader who used his influence to advocate for the poor and vulnerable.
According to the governor, Ukpai’s legacy is deeply rooted in Akwa Ibom State, despite being originally from Abia State. He noted that Uyo served as the headquarters of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, through which the late cleric spread the gospel worldwide and mentored generations of evangelists.
“For over six decades, he defined the spiritual soul of our dear state,” Eno said, adding that Ukpai consistently prayed for peace and progress while offering guidance that supported governance and development efforts.
The governor also acknowledged Ukpai’s role as a former National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, describing him as a key supporter of his administration’s ARISE Agenda.
Other speakers at the event paid glowing tributes to the late cleric. Emmanuel Kure of the Throne Room Ministry described him as a spiritual intercessor and a hero of faith whose legacy would inspire a new generation of preachers. Similarly, PFN National President Francis Wale Oke hailed Ukpai as one of the founding fathers of the organisation.
Speaking on behalf of stakeholders, former Nigerian Ambassador to Russia, Asam Asam, commended Ukpai’s dedication to mentoring leaders and fostering human capital development.
Governor Eno extended condolences to Ukpai’s wife, Dr. Philomena, and the family, assuring them of continued support in preserving his legacy.
