A group of Nigerian teenagers has recounted harrowing experiences of sexual exploitation after being trafficked to Mali under false promises of employment and better living conditions.

The victims, who were recently rescued and repatriated to Nigeria, revealed that they were deceived by traffickers posing as recruitment agents. Upon arrival in Mali, they were subjected to abuse, forced labor, and repeated sexual exploitation by their handlers and clients.

According to the teenagers, their ordeal began when they were approached with offers of jobs in hospitality and domestic services. However, upon crossing the border, their documents were confiscated, and they were forced into exploitative conditions with no means of escape.

“We were lied to. They told us we would work in hotels, but when we got there, everything changed,” one of the victims said. Many of them reported being threatened with violence if they refused to comply with demands, leaving them trapped in a cycle of abuse.

Officials from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons confirmed the rescue operation and reiterated the government’s commitment to combating human trafficking. The agency emphasized the need for increased awareness, particularly among young people, to prevent them from falling victim to such schemes.

Experts have also called for stronger cross-border collaboration between West African nations to dismantle trafficking networks and prosecute offenders. The psychological and physical trauma experienced by the victims highlights the urgent need for rehabilitation and reintegration programs.
