Iran executed 19-year-old Olympic wrestler Navid Mohammadi along with Mehdi Ghasemiand and Saeed Davoudi in the early hours of Thursday. The three men were hanged to death, according to reports from Iranian American human rights activists and dissidents.
Iran International reported that the trio had been accused of killing two police officers during nationwide protests earlier this year. The Mizan news agency confirmed that the judiciary had passed death sentences on all three men.
Authorities alleged that the men used cold weapons, including swords, knives, and machetes, in the attack that resulted in the officers’ deaths. The executions come in the wake of widespread protests in Iran during December and January, which were met with a severe government crackdown.
Mohammadi, a national wrestling champion and member of the Iran national wrestling team, was reportedly executed publicly, drawing condemnation from human rights groups. The killings highlight the continuing tensions and heavy-handed response to civil unrest in the country.
