President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during an official engagement at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, highlighted notable athletes of Nigerian heritage while addressing King Charles III. His remarks were aimed at underscoring the deep-rooted ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, particularly in areas of culture, migration, and shared development goals.

In his speech, Tinubu referenced prominent sports figures such as Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua as examples of individuals whose Nigerian heritage continues to shape their global identities despite representing the United Kingdom. He also mentioned rugby star Maro Itoje, noting that their achievements reflect a strong human connection between both nations.

Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria and the UK share more than a colonial past, pointing instead to a continuing partnership grounded in mutual respect, resilience, and a shared vision for progress. According to him, this relationship is evident in various sectors, especially through the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK.

He pointed out that the Nigerian diaspora in Britain remains one of the most vibrant and impactful communities globally. Within the healthcare sector, he noted, Nigerian professionals play a critical role. He specifically highlighted the contributions of Nigerian doctors and nurses within the National Health Service, describing them as indispensable to service delivery. He added that Nigerian-trained doctors constitute one of the largest groups of international medical personnel in the system.

Further reinforcing bilateral ties, Tinubu referenced the Commonwealth of Nations as a platform that continues to unite both countries alongside 54 others. He expressed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting the growth and relevance of the Commonwealth under the leadership of King Charles III.

Overall, the President’s remarks positioned sports, healthcare, and international cooperation as key pillars sustaining the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
