The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has opened discussions with Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez as part of efforts to strengthen the Super Eagles ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
According to reports, the federation has held direct talks with the 24-year-old defender before the announcement of the squad for Nigeria’s upcoming friendly matches against Iran and Jordan.
Sources close to the player suggest that the discussions have been positive, raising the possibility of a first-time invitation to the national team. Fernandez could be included in the squad to train and gradually integrate into the setup under head coach Eric Chelle.
Born in London, Fernandez is eligible to represent both England and Nigeria. However, he is believed to be leaning towards committing his international future to Nigeria, his country of heritage.
At club level, the Rangers defender has been in impressive form this season, scoring six goals in 26 appearances across all competitions. His performances have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently named the club’s Player of the Month for January 2026.
If included in the upcoming squad, Fernandez would follow a growing trend of dual-national players choosing to represent Nigeria, as the Super Eagles continue to expand their talent pool ahead of future competitions.
