President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. The brief ceremony took place at the President’s office on Monday around 2:30 pm, following Oyedele’s confirmation by the Senate five days earlier.
Oyedele, 50, hails from Ikaram, Akoko, in Ondo State, and brings over two decades of experience in fiscal policy and tax administration. Prior to his appointment, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which led a major overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system. The committee’s work produced four executive bills—the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill—consolidating over 60 taxes into fewer than 10 statutes. The reforms, implemented in 2026, introduced zero income tax for Nigerians earning N800,000 or less, exempted small businesses with turnover below N50 million from major taxes, and provided incentives for employment and wage growth.
Before joining the committee, Oyedele spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, rising to Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology, a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, and has completed executive programs at the London School of Economics, Yale University, Harvard Kennedy School, and the Gordon Institute of Business Science. He is currently a professor at Babcock University and a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.
During his Senate screening, Oyedele described his appointment as “a call to serve at a critical time for Nigeria’s fiscal and economic transformation.” He succeeds Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, now Minister of State at the Ministry of Budget and National Planning.
