The Nigeria Police Force has begun an investigation into allegations that officers attached to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force were involved in acts of extortion against members of the public. The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force is a government enforcement agency responsible for maintaining order and enforcing environmental and traffic related regulations across Lagos State.

Police authorities said the probe followed complaints from residents and motorists who alleged that some task force officers demanded illegal payments during enforcement operations.

The Nigeria Police Force which is the national law enforcement agency tasked with maintaining internal security said it would examine the claims carefully and ensure accountability if wrongdoing is established.

Residents who raised the allegations claimed that some enforcement officers stopped motorists during routine operations and requested money before allowing them to proceed. Such actions if proven would constitute abuse of authority and violation of public service rules.

Officials emphasized that the investigation aims to determine the authenticity of the claims and identify individuals responsible for any misconduct.

Public complaints about extortion and abuse of authority have occasionally emerged in relation to various enforcement units across the country.

Analysts say addressing such issues requires transparent investigations and appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.

Police authorities urged citizens to report incidents of misconduct through official channels to help strengthen accountability within security institutions.

Observers say effective oversight and public cooperation are essential in ensuring that enforcement agencies maintain public trust while carrying out their responsibilities.
