Authorities in Anambra State have arrested a Nnewi-based native doctor, John Ezenagu, over alleged activities considered to be in violation of the state’s security regulations.

Ezenagu, widely known by the alias “Mmou Mmili Afulu Anya,” was apprehended by operatives of Agunechemba, a security structure established by the state government to enforce safety laws and maintain order across communities.

Following his arrest, security personnel took the suspect to his residence in Nnewi on Friday, where a search of the premises was conducted. Officials said the visit was also meant to allow him clarify the nature of his practices and activities.

Speaking during the parade of the suspect, the Special Adviser to the governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, alleged that the native doctor had been enticing young men and women with promises of instant wealth. According to him, Ezenagu reportedly instructed individuals seeking prosperity to perform rituals involving bathing in a stream located behind his residence.

Emeakayi explained that such practices violate provisions of the state’s Homeland Security regulations, stressing that the suspect had previously been warned by authorities to discontinue the activity. Despite the caution, officials said he allegedly continued to engage in the same conduct.

He further stated that once preliminary investigations are concluded, the suspect would be handed over to the police for further inquiry. If the allegations are substantiated, he could face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Responding to the allegations while speaking with journalists, Ezenagu admitted wrongdoing and appealed for leniency. He said he was unaware that his actions contravened the state’s security laws and asked for forgiveness from Chukwuma Soludo, the state government, and the people of Anambra.

The native doctor explained that he had previously dredged the river behind his home and believed he had legitimate rights over it. He also pledged to desist from any activity capable of polluting the water body or misleading young people.

Earlier in January 2025, Governor Soludo signed the Agunechemba Homeland Security Law 2025, which was passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly. The legislation aims to strengthen community participation in security management and promote social reforms aimed at tackling crime and related threats in the state.
