Tension briefly flared in Niger State after a group of youths reportedly confronted military personnel enforcing a local curfew, raising concerns about community-military relations in the region. The incident was highlighted on X by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert operating in the Lake Chad area.
According to Makama, the incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on March 10 when troops from the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, were on patrol to enforce the curfew declared by the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area moving along the Correctional Service Office area in New Bussa when they stopped some motorcycles for checks.
During the encounter, a number of youths reportedly became aggressive, stoning the soldiers, attempting to wrestle a rifle from them, and hurling abusive language. In response, the troops fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd. The youths subsequently fled, and no injuries were reported.
The Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service later informed the local police about the incident. Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in New Bussa promptly deployed additional security personnel to the area, though the youths had already dispersed.
Makama stated that community leaders, including the village head, were invited and cautioned to ensure residents maintain peace and avoid confrontations with security forces. The military continued routine patrols in the area to enforce the curfew and maintain order.
No arrests were made during the incident, and authorities emphasized that the situation was contained without escalation. Security experts say such confrontations highlight the delicate balance between enforcing law and maintaining trust with local communities.
Residents in New Bussa and surrounding areas have been urged to comply with curfew regulations and cooperate with security personnel to prevent misunderstandings. Authorities reiterated that warning shots were used solely as a deterrent, not as an act of aggression, and stressed the importance of community support in ensuring public safety.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in enforcing security measures in regions with heightened tension, emphasizing the need for collaboration between security agencies and local communities to prevent violence and maintain stability.
