UK Announces Road Closures, No-Fly Zones for Tinubu’s State Visit

The United Kingdom will enforce strict security measures, including road closures and extended airspace restrictions, ahead of the planned state visit of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to the country next week.

Tinubu is scheduled to arrive in Britain with his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday, March 18. The visit will begin with an official reception hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle.

In preparation for the high-profile visit, Thames Valley Police confirmed that security operations are being coordinated with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security agencies.

Authorities announced that airspace restrictions over Windsor, which are already permanently in place around Windsor Castle, will be temporarily expanded on March 18. The extended restrictions will run from 7:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. to ensure maximum security during the visit.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall of the Thames Valley Police Joint Operations Unit said the airspace limitations form only one component of a comprehensive security plan designed for the presidential visit.

According to Hall, law enforcement agencies have extensive experience managing security during royal ceremonies and high-profile diplomatic engagements in Windsor. He noted that months of planning and coordination have gone into ensuring the event proceeds without incident.

He also warned that the police would strictly enforce the airspace restrictions, stressing that anyone who violates them would be committing an offence under the Air Navigation Order and could face arrest.

In addition to the airspace limitations, a large number of officers with specialized capabilities will be deployed across the Windsor area. These include search teams, mounted police units, road policing officers, and armed response personnel. Local neighbourhood officers and teams operating under Project Servator will also be present to engage with members of the public and maintain security.

Authorities will further reinforce safety with the use of Windsor’s extensive closed-circuit television surveillance network and hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, alongside other undisclosed security arrangements.

Meanwhile, residents and visitors have been advised to expect temporary disruptions. Road closures and parking restrictions are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 17, with possible traffic delays around Windsor throughout the duration of the state visit.

Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities as part of efforts to ensure a safe and successful diplomatic event.
