Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unveiled new electrification projects in the Gbaji-Seme and Owode-Apa areas of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, aimed at improving electricity supply to thousands of homes and businesses in the corridor.
The projects were facilitated by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as part of the state government’s efforts to expand energy access and strengthen infrastructure in underserved communities.
Sanwo-Olu was represented at the commissioning ceremony by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, who said the initiative would significantly enhance power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa axis.
According to Hamzat, the electrification project marks an important milestone for residents and businesses in the Badagry West area, many of whom have long faced challenges with inadequate electricity supply.
“The electrification works we are commissioning today will significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, and thousands of homes, shops and businesses will now benefit from improved and more stable electricity supply,” he said.
He added that the project goes beyond installing power infrastructure, noting that it is intended to restore confidence, unlock economic opportunities and improve the living conditions of residents in the affected communities.
Hamzat also highlighted the strategic importance of Badagry as both a historic town and a major entry point into Nigeria, stressing that the corridor holds significant economic potential for trade and cross-border commerce.
Located near the border with the Republic of Benin, the Badagry axis serves as a gateway for regional trade within the West African sub-region.
The governor noted that reliable electricity remains critical to unlocking the area’s economic potential, particularly for traders, artisans, small manufacturers and service providers.
He explained that the initiative aligns with the administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, which prioritises improved infrastructure and expanded access to energy across the state.
Sanwo-Olu also noted that the recent inauguration of the board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission would further position the state to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively.
He urged residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa and neighbouring communities to protect the newly installed infrastructure from vandalism and take collective ownership of the project.
