Suspected political thugs have set fire to a ward office belonging to the African Democratic Congress in the hometown of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi. The African Democratic Congress is one of Nigeria’s registered political parties and has recently increased its activities ahead of future electoral contests.

Witnesses in the community reported that the attackers arrived in the early hours of the morning and set the building ablaze before fleeing the area. Residents said the incident caused panic within the neighborhood as flames quickly engulfed parts of the structure.

Local security officials confirmed that the building sustained extensive damage, although no casualties were immediately reported. Authorities have since begun investigations aimed at identifying those responsible for the attack.

Political observers say the incident reflects the growing tensions within Rivers State’s political environment, particularly as parties intensify preparations for upcoming elections. Party officials condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition supporters.

Leaders within the African Democratic Congress called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. They argued that acts of violence undermine democratic participation and threaten political stability.

Residents of the community expressed concern about the rising trend of politically motivated violence in parts of the state. Many urged authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent further incidents.

Civil society groups also criticized the attack, warning that political intolerance could escalate if preventive steps are not taken. They emphasized the need for political actors to promote peaceful engagement rather than resort to intimidation or destruction of property.

Security analysts say such incidents often emerge during periods of heightened political competition, especially in states where rival factions are struggling for influence.

For now, investigators continue to gather evidence as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify the individuals involved.
