Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has opened up about the reasons behind his decision to distance himself politically from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dispelling speculation about personal conflict.
In a recent interview, Fintiri said his shift was driven by principled considerations and evolving political alignment, rather than personal disagreement. He explained that his focus had gradually shifted towards advancing policies and alliances that he believes better reflect the aspirations of his constituents and align with his long-term vision for his state and region.
The governor noted that political partnerships, especially within opposition circles, often evolve in response to changing national dynamics and the need to build winning coalitions for future contests. He emphasised that his decision was rooted in strategic thinking rather than animosity, reiterating respect for Atiku’s contributions to national politics.
Fintiri also acknowledged Atiku’s long career in public service, describing him as a “veteran politician,” but said that leadership choices must ultimately reflect current political realities and priorities. He indicated that while his approach may diverge from that of some national figures, his ultimate commitment remains with the people of Adamawa State.
Political analysts say the governor’s comments reflect broader shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape, where regional leaders are increasingly asserting autonomy and reconfiguring alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. Such moves are often aimed at positioning states and parties favorably in what promises to be a highly competitive electoral cycle.
Although Fintiri stopped short of detailing his future political plans, his public explanation is expected to fuel further conversations about internal dynamics within opposition parties and the evolving strategies of key political actors.
