The Nigeria Police Council (NPC) has formally confirmed Tunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), solidifying his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The confirmation was announced on Monday following a high-level meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The decision effectively transitions Disu from his previous role as acting IGP to the country’s top policing position on a permanent basis.

Disu’s confirmation comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu appointed him as acting IGP on February 24, 2026. His appointment followed the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, marking a significant leadership shift within the nation’s law enforcement hierarchy.

According to earlier reports by Daily Post, President Tinubu officially decorated Disu with the rank of Inspector-General on February 25, a day after naming him acting head of the Force. The decoration ceremony signaled executive backing for his leadership pending the statutory confirmation by the Police Council.

The Nigeria Police Council, constitutionally empowered to advise the President on police appointments and confirm the IGP, comprises key stakeholders including the President, state governors, and senior government officials. Monday’s endorsement completes the formal process required to validate Disu’s position.

With his confirmation, Disu now assumes full authority to steer the operational, administrative, and strategic direction of the Nigeria Police Force. His tenure begins at a time of heightened national security concerns, public scrutiny of policing standards, and ongoing calls for structural reforms within the Force.

Security analysts expect that his leadership will focus on strengthening intelligence-led policing, enhancing internal discipline, and rebuilding public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Further details regarding policy direction and immediate reforms are anticipated in the coming days.
