Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been appointed as Iran’s acting Supreme Leader, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (ISNA), marking a significant development in the country’s political and religious leadership structure.

The decision followed his election by Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council as the jurist member of the Guardian Council within the temporary Leadership Council framework. The Leadership Council is constitutionally mandated to assume the duties of the Supreme Leader in the event of a vacancy, continuing in that capacity until the Assembly of Experts formally selects a permanent successor.

Arafi, 67, is a senior cleric and an influential figure within Iran’s religious establishment. He currently serves on the powerful Guardian Council, the body responsible for vetting legislation and approving candidates for public office. His confirmation as part of the three-member interim leadership structure positions him at the center of Iran’s transitional authority during a sensitive period.

Under Iran’s constitutional provisions, when the office of the Supreme Leader becomes vacant, a provisional council assumes responsibility for leadership functions. This council typically comprises the president, the head of the judiciary, and a cleric selected by the Expediency Discernment Council. In the current arrangement, Arafi will serve alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.

The Interim Council is legally empowered to oversee key leadership responsibilities, including command authority and strategic state oversight, pending the formal selection of a new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts. The Assembly, made up of elected clerics, holds exclusive constitutional authority to appoint or dismiss the Supreme Leader.

Arafi’s appointment signals continuity within Iran’s clerical and political system, as the country navigates a transitional phase in its highest office. The coming period is expected to focus on maintaining institutional stability while the Assembly of Experts undertakes the process of determining Iran’s next permanent Supreme Leader.
