Iranian state media on Sunday confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been killed following coordinated military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States.

The confirmation comes a day after large-scale attacks targeted multiple locations across Iran. Explosions were reported in several major cities, including the capital, Tehran, as airspace restrictions and communication disruptions were imposed nationwide. The strikes marked a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and the allied forces.

Khamenei, born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad in eastern Iran, was one of the most influential political and religious figures in the country’s modern history. He emerged as a central figure in the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew the US-backed monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Khamenei assumed the position of Supreme Leader, becoming the highest authority in Iran’s political and religious hierarchy.

During his decades-long leadership, Khamenei oversaw major political, military, and strategic developments, including Iran’s nuclear program expansion, regional alliances, and confrontations with Western powers.

United States President Donald Trump stated that Khamenei was unable to evade American intelligence capabilities during the operation.

“The supreme leader was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do,” Trump said in a statement.

Iranian authorities have yet to provide detailed information regarding succession arrangements or the broader implications for the country’s leadership structure. Analysts suggest the development could significantly reshape political dynamics within Iran and further alter the balance of power in the Middle East.

More details are expected as the situation unfolds.
