Prominent opposition leaders have rejected the newly passed Electoral Act 2026, calling for a comprehensive review of the legislation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a joint statement issued shortly after the law’s passage, the political leaders expressed dissatisfaction with certain provisions of the Act, arguing that it does not sufficiently guarantee transparency, fairness, and equal participation in the electoral process. They maintained that while reforms are necessary, the current framework leaves critical gaps that could affect public confidence in future elections.
According to the opposition bloc, the Act requires further amendment to strengthen campaign finance regulations, improve dispute resolution mechanisms, and enhance safeguards for voters and political parties. They warned that without urgent revisions, the law may not fully reflect the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.
The group also urged the National Assembly to reopen discussions on the legislation, emphasising the importance of broad stakeholder consultation in shaping electoral reforms. They insisted that credible elections depend not only on administrative readiness but also on a legal framework that commands trust across party lines.
Although the Federal Government and relevant legislative committees have yet to respond publicly to the opposition’s demands, political observers say the development could trigger renewed debate over electoral reforms as preparations for 2027 gradually intensify.
The Electoral Act 2026 was designed to update existing provisions governing Nigeria’s electoral system, including processes for voting, result transmission, and dispute adjudication. Supporters argue that it modernises certain procedures, but critics contend that further refinements are necessary to ensure full transparency and inclusivity.
As political alignments continue to evolve, the call for amendments signals that discussions around electoral credibility remain central to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
