The Lagos State Government has constituted a Central Planning Committee to oversee and coordinate the final burial arrangements for the late Akran of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

Oba Akran, who served as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, passed away on January 12 at the age of 89 following a brief illness. The state government described his death as a significant loss to the traditional institution and the people of Lagos State.

Announcing the inauguration of the committee, the government emphasized the need for unity, transparency, integrity, and strict adherence to tradition in planning and executing the burial rites. It noted that the monarch’s final rites must reflect his stature, contributions, and enduring legacy within Badagry and the state at large.

The committee will be chaired by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin. Nunayon Ahisu has been appointed as co-chairman, while Dr. Olajide Messewaku will serve as secretary.

According to the government, the committee’s mandate is to ensure a dignified, seamless, and well-coordinated burial ceremony befitting the late monarch. It is also expected to work closely with the Badagry Traditional Council, members of the royal family, and other key stakeholders to uphold cultural protocols and ensure a smooth process.

Oba Akran was widely respected for his leadership and service to both his community and the state. The government reiterated its commitment to honoring his memory through a befitting farewell that reflects the esteem in which he was held.
