Tragedy struck Kano State on Sunday as more than 30 people were reportedly killed in a devastating road accident at Kwanar Barde in Gezawa Local Government Area.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday and involved a trailer said to be heading toward Gujungu. The vehicle allegedly lost control due to reckless driving, resulting in a fatal collision. Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf confirmed the incident in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
Describing the incident as heartbreaking, the governor extended condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of the deceased. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Governor Yusuf directed the State Ministry of Health to provide free and comprehensive medical treatment to all survivors receiving care in hospitals. In addition, he instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to assess the scale of the tragedy and coordinate support measures for affected families.
The governor further urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise caution, avoid reckless driving, and strictly comply with traffic regulations to prevent future occurrences.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps had yet to release an official statement. Attempts to reach the FRSC spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, were unsuccessful.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over road safety standards and traffic law enforcement in the state.
