The Oyo State Government has officially announced plans to begin full implementation of the Proof of Address system, setting March 1 as the take off date for enforcement across the state. The initiative is aimed at improving security, strengthening resident identification, and enhancing service delivery.

State officials said the move follows months of consultations with security agencies, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders. The Proof of Address system is expected to create a reliable database of residents, helping authorities verify identities and track legitimate occupants of homes and business premises.

According to government representatives, the program will require residents to provide verifiable address information when accessing certain public services or engaging in official transactions. Landlords and property managers will also be expected to maintain accurate tenant records as part of the compliance process.

Security agencies in the state have welcomed the development, describing it as a proactive measure to tackle rising cases of criminal activity linked to anonymous housing arrangements. They noted that better address documentation could support investigations and improve emergency response.

However, civil society groups have urged the government to ensure the process does not become burdensome for low income residents who may lack formal documentation. They have called for clear guidelines, public awareness campaigns, and affordable registration procedures.

The state government has assured citizens that the system will be implemented in phases, with sensitization programs already underway. Officials emphasized that the goal is not to punish residents but to build a safer and more organized environment.

Observers say if properly managed, the initiative could improve urban planning, tax collection, and social services distribution. The March 1 launch date marks a significant step in Oyo’s broader strategy to modernize governance and strengthen internal security.
