The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun early consultations with security agencies as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of coordinated planning to ensure credible and peaceful polls.
INEC officials said lessons from previous elections show that security remains one of the most critical factors in voter confidence and turnout. They emphasized that timely collaboration with law enforcement agencies will help address potential flashpoints before they escalate.
At a recent meeting, representatives of the police, civil defense corps, and other security services discussed strategies for intelligence sharing, rapid response, and protection of election materials. INEC noted that election security goes beyond election day and includes the pre election campaign period.
Electoral experts say early engagement is a positive sign, as it allows institutions to identify logistical gaps and training needs well in advance. They stress that professionalism and neutrality among security personnel are essential to maintaining public trust.
Civil society groups have urged INEC and security agencies to also focus on voter education and community engagement. According to them, reducing misinformation and political tension can lower the risk of violence.
INEC reiterated its commitment to improving election technology and transparency, adding that security planning must align with innovations such as electronic transmission of results and biometric verification.
Officials assured Nigerians that preparations are being guided by a determination to strengthen democratic processes. They said safeguarding voters, electoral staff, and observers remains a top priority.
