The North East Development Commission has expressed deep sorrow over the road accident that claimed the lives of journalists in Bauchi State, extending condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the state government.

In a statement, the commission described the incident as a painful loss not only to the media community but also to the region’s development efforts. It acknowledged the vital role journalists play in promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness.

Officials said the accident, which occurred while the journalists were reportedly on official duty, highlights the risks media professionals face in the line of service. The commission praised the dedication of the victims, noting that their work helped spotlight development challenges and progress in the North East.

The Bauchi State Government also expressed grief, promising to support the families of the deceased. State authorities said investigations were underway to determine the cause of the accident and identify measures to improve road safety for public servants and media workers.

Leaders of the NUJ described the tragedy as a major blow, calling for improved welfare and insurance coverage for journalists, especially those traveling for assignments. They urged organizations to prioritize safety arrangements for reporters covering events in distant locations.

Civil society groups have joined in mourning, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists who serve as a bridge between government and citizens. Many called for better road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents.

The NEDC reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to improve regional infrastructure, including safer highways. It said development must include measures that protect those who report on progress and challenges.

As tributes continue to pour in, colleagues remember the fallen journalists as dedicated professionals whose contributions will not be forgotten.
