Senate Delay Stalls Electoral Reforms As Group Warns Of Risk To Democracy

Concerns are mounting over the delay in passing key amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act, as civil society groups warn that prolonged inaction by the Senate could undermine preparations for future elections and weaken democratic accountability. Reform advocates say several critical proposals remain stuck at the legislative stage despite repeated calls for urgency.

Among the proposed changes are provisions to strengthen the independence of the electoral commission, improve the legal framework for electronic transmission of results, and address loopholes exposed during previous elections. Supporters argue that timely reforms are necessary to build public confidence and reduce post election disputes.

A coalition of pro democracy organizations said the delay sends a troubling signal about lawmakers’ commitment to credible elections. In a joint statement, the group urged the National Assembly to treat electoral reform as a matter of national priority rather than partisan negotiation.

They warned that without clear legal backing for innovations such as digital voter accreditation and results transmission, the country risks returning to outdated practices that have historically fueled controversy and litigation. According to the coalition, uncertainty in the law can also hamper the electoral commission’s planning and procurement processes.

Some senators have attributed the delay to the need for thorough review and consultation, noting that electoral legislation has far reaching implications. However, critics counter that many of the proposals have already undergone public hearings and technical scrutiny, and that further postponement may be politically motivated.

Election observers say Nigeria’s growing population and expanding voter register make modernization of the electoral framework even more urgent. They stress that reforms should focus on transparency, inclusiveness, and dispute resolution mechanisms that reduce tension during and after polls.

As debate continues, civic groups say they will intensify advocacy and public engagement to ensure the reform process does not lose momentum. They maintain that credible elections are the foundation of stable governance and that any delay in strengthening the system carries long term risks for democracy.
