The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has said that Nigeria’s challenges are rooted in poor political leadership rather than a lack of resources, describing the country as richly endowed but badly governed.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during a thanksgiving service to mark the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, held at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan. He urged Nigerians to continually pray for political leaders, noting that those entrusted with power bear the greatest responsibility for the nation’s difficulties.
According to the former Anambra State governor, the mismanagement of public resources by politicians has largely contributed to widespread hardship across the country. He stressed that Nigeria’s problems would ease significantly if leaders committed themselves to the responsible use of public funds.
“I make a request to Nigerians: please remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed,” Obi said.
He appealed for divine guidance for political office holders, asking that their hearts be touched to use public money for the common good. Obi expressed confidence that such a change in leadership mindset would place the country on the path of sustainable development.
While speaking at the event, Obi also commended the developmental strides recorded in Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde. He described Ibadan as a historic city that has played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s intellectual and political foundation.
“It is always an honour to be in Ibadan, a city of knowledge and hope. Ibadan has witnessed remarkable upliftment under Governor Seyi Makinde,” he said.
Obi expressed optimism about the future of Oyo State as it marks its golden jubilee, praying that the next 50 years would surpass the achievements of the past. He praised Makinde’s leadership style and dedication, recalling his involvement at the early stage of the administration.
“As we celebrate 50 years, I pray that the next 50 years of this great state will be exemplary,” Obi added, while offering prayers for the governor, his family and members of his team.
