The Federal Government has approved the construction of a N1 trillion Kano Metropolitan Rail Service, a landmark infrastructure project expected to transform urban transportation and stimulate economic growth in Kano State.

The approval was disclosed on Wednesday by the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, while addressing members of the Kano contingent who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State. The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to Governor Yusuf, the proposed rail project is designed to provide a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system that will connect major districts within the Kano metropolis. He explained that the initiative would significantly ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and enhance mobility for residents, while also improving access to commercial and residential areas across the city.

The governor described the Kano Metropolitan Rail Service as a transformative intervention that would boost economic activities, create employment opportunities, and improve the overall quality of life for the people of the state. He added that the project would reposition Kano as a major transportation and commercial hub in northern Nigeria, aligning with broader national development goals.

Governor Yusuf noted that the project reflects his administration’s recent political realignment with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the move was driven by the need to attract critical development projects and foster stronger collaboration with the centre.

He assured residents that the Kano State Government would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure the smooth implementation of the rail project, emphasizing transparency, efficiency, and timely delivery. The governor further pledged that the state would put in place complementary policies and infrastructure to maximize the benefits of the rail service.

Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the project, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting federal initiatives that promote sustainable development and economic prosperity in Kano State.
