The Nigerian Correctional Service has dismissed reports of a jailbreak at the Benin custodial centre, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the service authorities, officials said there was no breach of security at the facility and that all inmates remain accounted for. The clarification followed widespread rumours on social media suggesting that several detainees had escaped.

Correctional authorities explained that an internal audit of inmate records and physical headcounts was conducted immediately after the reports surfaced. They said the verification confirmed that no prisoner was missing and that operations at the centre continued without disruption.

Officials expressed concern that unverified information can cause panic among families of inmates and undermine public confidence in the correctional system. They urged members of the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate updates.

Security experts note that correctional facilities across the country have faced scrutiny in recent years over infrastructure challenges and overcrowding. However, authorities insist that improvements in surveillance, perimeter control, and staff training have strengthened security in many centres.

The service also warned that spreading false information about security institutions could have legal consequences. It stressed that misinformation can divert attention and resources away from genuine operational priorities.

Community leaders in the area said the rumours created temporary anxiety but welcomed the prompt clarification from officials. They called for continued transparency from correctional authorities to maintain trust.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reiterated its commitment to safe custody, humane treatment of inmates, and ongoing reforms aimed at improving conditions and security nationwide.
