Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have been injured following an attack by suspected smugglers during an anti smuggling operation in Ogun State. The incident occurred along a known smuggling corridor near the border, an area frequently used for the illegal movement of goods.
According to Customs authorities, the officers were part of a patrol team acting on intelligence about a convoy suspected to be transporting contraband items into the country. When the team attempted to intercept the vehicles, they reportedly came under violent resistance from the suspects.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers used vehicles to block the road and allegedly rammed into the patrol unit in a bid to escape. In the confrontation that followed, two officers sustained injuries and were later taken to a medical facility for treatment. Their condition was described as stable.
Customs officials condemned the attack, describing it as a direct assault on law enforcement personnel carrying out their lawful duties. They reiterated that smuggling not only undermines the nation’s economy but also fuels insecurity and organized crime.
Ogun State, due to its proximity to international borders, has long been a hotspot for smuggling activities, particularly involving rice, petroleum products, and foreign goods that evade import duties. Security agencies have intensified patrols in the region, but confrontations between smugglers and officers have become increasingly frequent.
Local residents expressed concern about the growing boldness of smuggling syndicates, noting that such clashes endanger both security personnel and civilians. Some community leaders called for improved intelligence sharing and better equipment for enforcement teams.
The Nigeria Customs Service said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. Authorities also assured the public that operations in the area would continue, with reinforced security measures to deter further incidents.
