Sevilla head coach Matías Almeyda has admitted he is considering a tactical shift to get more out of striker Akor Adams, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Argentine coach is open to moving away from his preferred single-striker system as he seeks to reignite Sevilla’s struggling attack.
Adams has struggled since completing a permanent move from Montpellier to the Sánchez-Pizjuán last January. Before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations in December, the Nigerian forward had managed just three goals and two assists in 14 La Liga appearances, leaving Sevilla’s attacking woes unresolved.
However, Adams found form with Nigeria under Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle. Deployed in a 4-4-2 diamond alongside Victor Osimhen, the 24-year-old thrived, stretching defences, running the channels, and linking brilliantly with Osimhen. In just five games, Adams scored twice, assisted two goals, and had two strikes ruled out, helping Nigeria reach the semi-finals before claiming the bronze medal.
The duo’s performances earned praise from many, including Man City great Yaya Touré, with the Super Eagles finishing the tournament as the highest-scoring team on 14 goals.
Returning to Spain with renewed confidence, Adams marked his comeback with a brace in Sevilla’s 2–2 draw at Elche, ending the club’s poor start to 2026.
Adams: Almeyda open to change as Sevilla hunt for goals
Next up for Sevilla is a home clash against Athletic Bilbao, fresh from a 3–2 Champions League win over Atalanta. Almeyda is under pressure to deliver points and has hinted he may pair Adams with Isaac Romero, replicating the successful Chelle-style partnership with Osimhen.
Almeyda fielded both forwards against Elche and praised their impact. “It’s always good when our striker scores,” he said, referencing Adams. “Both of them came into the match with renewed energy, fresh from a good run of form, and that shows on a player’s face. Akor had the first goal after hitting the post earlier. The second was a great finish, and he showed commitment by taking the penalty. We might see them together, yes, now or later.”
Sevilla currently sit 15th in La Liga with 21 points from 20 matches, having won six, drawn three, and lost 11. Before Adams left for AFCON, the club were ninth, but they lost four consecutive games in his absence without scoring.
The draw at Elche provided a first point of the year, and a victory over Bilbao could mark the start of a much-needed climb up the table.
