Ijebu Ode was thrown into tension on Tuesday as protesters took to the streets over allegations that the Ogun State Government plans to impose a candidate as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
The protest followed growing speculation surrounding the succession process to the revered traditional stool. Demonstrators, made up of youths, community leaders, and concerned residents, marched through major streets carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding transparency and respect for tradition.
The protesters accused the government of attempting to influence the selection process, which they insist should remain strictly in line with age-long customs and the authority of kingmakers.
“We will not accept imposition,” one protest leader said. “The Awujale stool is sacred, and the process must follow tradition, not politics.”
Security operatives were deployed to maintain order as the protest remained largely peaceful, though traffic was temporarily disrupted in parts of the town.
The Ogun State Government has denied the allegations, stating that it respects traditional institutions and has no intention of interfering in the selection process. Officials urged residents to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
Observers warn that continued tension could deepen divisions within the community if not properly addressed. Traditional rulers and elders have called for dialogue to prevent further unrest.
