The Federal Government has pledged to intervene in the ongoing ecological challenges facing parts of Ibadan, Oyo State, following reports of flooding, erosion, and environmental degradation affecting several communities.
Officials from the Federal Ministry of Environment said the government is aware of the scale of damage caused by uncontrolled urban expansion, blocked drainage systems, and climate-related factors. The ecological problems have displaced residents, destroyed properties, and disrupted economic activities in affected areas.
During a recent assessment visit, federal officials acknowledged that the situation requires urgent attention and collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities. They assured residents that technical evaluations are ongoing to determine appropriate long-term solutions.
The Federal Government noted that ecological intervention funds would be considered for projects such as drainage reconstruction, erosion control, and environmental remediation. However, officials emphasized that sustainable urban planning and proper waste management are critical to preventing future disasters.
Residents have repeatedly called for government action, citing recurring flooding during the rainy season. Community leaders expressed cautious optimism following the federal pledge, urging authorities to move quickly from promises to implementation.
Environmental experts warned that without immediate intervention, the ecological crisis could worsen, especially with predictions of heavier rainfall in coming months. They also stressed the need for public awareness and community participation in environmental protection.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing ecological challenges nationwide, stating that Ibadan’s situation highlights the broader need for climate resilience and responsible urban development.
