The rising cost of diabetes medication and the growing trend of drug rationing are turning a manageable medical condition into a deadly threat for thousands of Nigerians. Patients and healthcare advocates say insulin prices and essential test supplies have increased by as much as three hundred percent in recent years, placing life saving treatment out of reach for many families.
As a result, some patients now reduce their dosage, skip days, or abandon treatment altogether. Medical professionals warn that such practices lead to severe complications including kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, and premature death.
Hospitals report a steady increase in emergency cases linked to poorly managed diabetes, especially among low income earners who lack health insurance. Public health groups are calling on government agencies to regulate drug prices, expand health coverage, and support local pharmaceutical production to reduce dependence on imports.
Experts stress that diabetes should not be a death sentence in a modern society. Without urgent policy intervention, however, rising costs and limited access to care could transform a public health challenge into a national crisis.
