An Abuja High Court on Thursday struck out the criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, following the withdrawal of the case by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

Court documents showed that the Federal Government filed a Notice of Discontinuance, effectively terminating the criminal defamation and related charges earlier instituted against the lawmaker.

The case, which generated widespread public attention, arose from statements allegedly made by Akpoti Uduaghan during a televised interview, sparking national debate on freedom of expression, political accountability and the proper use of prosecutorial authority.

The Notice of Discontinuance, dated December 12, 2025, brought an end to the proceedings in suit number FHC ABJ CR 195 2025.

Delivering a brief ruling on Thursday, the presiding judge, Justice C N Oji, acknowledged the notice and formally struck out the case. The judge noted that the development highlighted the importance of restraint in the exercise of prosecutorial powers within a democratic society.

He expressed hope that the decision would promote healing, mutual respect and adherence to the rule of law.

Counsel representing the Federal Government confirmed the withdrawal of the charges, stating that the decision was taken in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and in the overall interest of justice and public confidence in the legal system.

Speaking after the court session, Akpoti Uduaghan described the ruling as a vindication, reaffirming her confidence in the judiciary.

She said she remained committed to serving her constituents and defending democratic rights, while appreciating her legal team and supporters for their backing throughout the legal process.

The case had drawn criticism from civil society organisations and rights groups, many of whom described it as an attempt to suppress free speech and political participation.
